Face ID – Invisible Technology

We usually equate technology with complexity; more knobs and gauges, more status indicators and screens. We consider a fighter jet cockpit high tech.. all those screens, switches and doodads… but what happens when technology is invisible?

Klingons… you get Klingons.

No, you don’t get ridge headed Russians, you get true magic. Real life, in person, working, pure magic.

Face ID Is Completely Invisible

And that is what makes it so high tech.. the fact you don’t notice it one BIT.

Touch ID is high tech, it’s a teensy tiny biometric fingerprint sensor that instantly reads the ridges in your fingerprint and compares that to a highly encrypted rendering stored in the phones processor.

But, you have to think about it.

You have to look for, then apply your finger to the sensor, then wait for the match. There is conscious thought to the process.

Face ID on the other hand has no such requirement, it simply works.

I lift my phone up to use it, and by that time, the incredibly underlying technology has already scanned my face in 3D and done what it needs to do, and unlocks my phone. There is zero conscious thought, it just happens in the course of using the phone.

THAT is where the magic is, when you don’t have to do think about it, you don’t have to act for it, when it just DOES. THIS is the real measure of technology, when it’s so high tech it disappears.

I’ve only been using my iPhone X for a couple days now, and I can’t get over how crazy amazing Face ID really is.
