iOS 5 Tour: Launch Day!

Today is the day! By 1PM EST iOS 5 should be available through iTunes. Along with the major features I’ve detailed the past 5 days, iOS 5 will drop with over 200 new features. One of the major things is simply the fact you will no longer need a computer to set up, administrate or otherwise own an iPhone or iPad. So, no longer is it a companion device, it can be a stand alone computer, think about Grandma…:-)

Mail is finally going to support folders, and have the option to keep 1,000 messages. Calendar has been redone with the ability to create new calendars and gets a week view. Along with the PC Free feature, you can now sync wirelessly. Another cord has been cut as well, you can do AirPlay mirroring wirelessly, great for presentations.

One very under the radar feature that actually makes a HUGE difference is 4 and 5 finger gestures. I’ve had this enabled for a while now through my developer options, but I can no longer live without it, and once you start using it, you won’t be able to either! Use a whole hand pinch to exit your app and return to your home screen. Use a 4 finger horizontal swipe to switch between apps and 4 finger sweeping up will open the multitasking menu! It may not sound Earth shaking, but once you start, you will wonder how you lived without it!
