iOS 5 Tour Day 5: iMessage

I’m constantly surprised by how many teenagers I see sporting Blackberry’s! Such a corporate device, hard to use, with next to nothing for apps, especially games, don’t kids these days like video games? Sure they do, but they like yammering on even more, and despite the wide availability of unlimited text message options, they pick their dads phone for one thing: Blackberry Messenger. Now they go on about he likes, and she said, he said, till their fingers cramp.

I’m sure Apple was just as surprised, so they got on it with something they are calling iMessage. Like BBM it gives the user the equivalent of unlimited text messages, sans that service provider, but does it in an Apple way. The service will work over the internet via Wi-Fi or 3G, and in a pinch, will use your text message service if it can’t connect to the Internet.

You can send text, photos and video of course, all in an easy to manage interface similar to the existing text app. So finally Apple gets a Blackberry style messenger to win back all those kids that righty deserve a phone that can do more then email, but what would take it over the top? How about the fact iMessage works on ALL iOS devices.

So, with a BBM, you can reach any one of their 80 million users simply by plugging in their PIN code. With iMessage, you can reach any of the 200 MILLION iOS users, and it’s expected to be extended to Mac OS X very soon as well. Group messages, delivery receipts, the ability to send media, iMessage is going to be received very happily by every iOS user out there!
